Overview

The Toyota Sequoia is a highly regarded full-sized SUV that inherits its durability from the Tundra pickup truck. Produced on American soil at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas facility in San Antonio, the Sequoia is the second-largest vehicle in the automaker’s stable, following the venerable Land Cruiser. While it’s known for its trail-tackling prowess, the Sequoia also offers a blend of cutting-edge technology and premium comforts. Plus, its vigor comes from a hybrid powertrain for optimal performance and fuel efficiency.

For the 2024 model year, Toyota introduces a Nightshade Package for the Limited trim that serves to bolster its exterior presence with black bodywork. Additionally, a TRD Off-Road Package is available for four-wheel drive Sequoias to enhance your all-terrain travels with essential overlanding upgrades.

Trim Levels, Powertrain, and Performance

Buyers of the 2024 Sequoia have a choice of either a seven- or eight-passenger configuration and five trim levels: SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Capstone. They all get the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, which consists of a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine and an electric motor that cooperate to produce 437 hp and 583 lb.-ft. of torque. A seamlessly shifting 10-speed automatic transmission directs power to the standard rear-wheel drivetrain, with optional part-time four-wheel drive available for enhanced traction.

When it comes to towing, the ‘24 Sequoia is a champion, with capacity that varies by trim and ranges from 8,980 to 9,520 pounds. Its fuel economy deserves attention as well, with the RWD version achieving an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway; 4WD will take that a tick downward to 19 city/22 highway.

Standard and Available Equipment

As the base trim of an upscale model, the SR5 is definitely well equipped, getting a moonroof, proximity keyless entry, tri-zone automatic climate control, heated power-adjustable front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, roof rails, LED headlights and fog lights, and heated power-folding side mirrors with reverse gear tilt-down and driver’s side auto-dimming. It also has push-button start, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, and an adjustable cargo shelf.

The Limited upgrades its cabin with synthetic-leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats with driver’s-side position memory, two 120V power outlets, and second- and third-row sunshades (manually controlled). The Platinum steps up with auto-leveling LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, a panoramic glass roof, heated and ventilated second-row captain’s chairs (which reduce seating to seven), leather upholstery with premium contrast stitching, ambient interior lighting, a power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, a digital rearview mirror, and a wireless phone charge pad.

Designed for off-roading, the TRD Pro is outfitted with a front skid plate, all-terrain tires, an electronically locking rear differential, an off-road suspension, Multi-Terrain Select with crawl control and downhill assist, and a Multi-Terrain Monitor with selectable front, side, and rear views. This trim’s interior has red accenting, all-weather floor mats, synthetic-leather upholstery with contrast stitching and “technical camo” inserts, and a moonroof. The Capstone’s equipment list more closely resembles the Platinum’s, but with power-extending running boards, wood interior trim, semi-aniline leather upholstery, and a 10-inch head-up display.

Many of those high-end amenities are available for the lower trims through various upgrade packages. Other packages of note include the TRD Off-Road Package, which supplies the all-terrain equipment found in the TRD Pro, and the blackout Nightshade Package, which is offered exclusively for the Limited.

Advanced Safety Features

All trim levels of the ‘24 Sequoia have Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 installed. This comprehensive suite of active driver-assist technologies consists of a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. Also standard are front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and trailer merge warning.

Multimedia and Connectivity

As the base trim, the SR5 gets the smallest infotainment array, with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, SiriusXM satellite radio, and an audio system with eight speakers. The Limited and above trims upgrade to a 14-inch touchscreen and a JBL audio system with 14 speakers (this sound unit is optional for the SR5 and Limited). Besides that, every trim comes with a trial subscription to Wi-Fi Connect and Drive Connect, which includes Cloud Navigation with Google Point of Interest, Intelligent Assistant, and Destination Assist.
