For more than 60 years, the Toyota Land Cruiser has been a symbol of rugged dependability. With its durable body-on-frame chassis, impressive towing capabilities, and reliable four-wheel drivetrain, this iconic model has maintained a solid standing and is widely considered one of the segment’s most stalwart options. Despite being out of circulation for the last two years, the celebrated Land Cruiser is back for model year 2024, boasting a redesign that makes it better than ever.

In a nod to prior iterations of this outright legend, the 2024 Land Cruiser flaunts a boxy look with a flattened roof, rounded headlights, and a “TOYOTA” heritage grille – all traits that once defined the earliest interpretations of this off-road kingpin. Contrasting with its overall retro vibe, the ‘24 Land Cruiser implements modern touches such as full LED lighting elements, an optional 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, and the latest version of Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. Most significantly, it’s powered by the brand’s i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, which generates 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque while achieving fuel economy of 22 mpg around town and 25 mpg on the highway.

Trims, Powertrain, and Performance

The all-new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is a full-sized SUV offered in three trim packages: 1958, Land Cruiser, and First Edition. Toyota’s i-FORCE MAX hybrid system pairs a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to produce 326 hp and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission completes the powertrain, and all trims are equipped with full-time four-wheel drive.

If hauling heavy equipment is in your future, you’ll be pleased to know that this reborn Land Cruiser can tow up to 6,000 pounds. It’s also quite efficient, reflecting the aforementioned fuel economy ratings (as estimated by the EPA) of 22 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.

Standard Amenities

The 1958 trim may pay homage to the original Land Cruiser from that calendar year, but its features are of course far more sophisticated now. The most notable among them are proximity keyless entry, push-button start, rain-sensing windshield wipers with an integrated de-icer, heated front seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped shift knob, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, circular LED headlights, LED fog lights, fabric upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, six USB ports, and two power outlets (one 12-volt and one 120-volt). For trail riding, the 1958 has 8 inches of ground clearance plus underbody skid plates, front and rear frame-mounted tow hooks, crawl control (CRAWL), an electronically controlled locking rear differential, and a locking Torsen limited-slip center differential.

The mid-grade Land Cruiser trim adds a power liftgate, color-selectable LED fog lights by Rigid Industries, rectangular LED headlights, roof rails, heated and ventilated front seats, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, all-weather floor liners and cargo mats, and Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Monitor with selectable front, side, and rear views. With the Premium Package elected, the Land Cruiser will also get Digital Key, illuminated entry, a moonroof, a center console cooler box, a digital rearview mirror, wireless phone charging, leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat with position memory, a head-up display, and a couple of advanced driver-assist technologies (detailed in the next section). It also qualifies for a manual cushion-length extender for the driver’s seat.

At the top of the lineup, the First Edition reads like a fully optioned version of the Land Cruiser trim. On top of all of that fine equipment, it returns the circular LED headlights seen on the base trim and is dressed up with front and rear mud guards, rock rails, and roof rails with a cargo basket.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Technologies

To reduce the likelihood of collisions and streamline the driving experience, the redesigned Land Cruiser gets the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 technology suite as standard equipment. This bundle of advanced driving aids consists of a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, road sign assist, automatic high beams, and proactive driving assist.

All trims also have blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, trailer merge warning, trailer sway control, and front and rear parking sensors. The First Edition is heightened with a panoramic view monitor and front cross-traffic alert, both of which are available for the Land Cruiser trim.

Infotainment and Connectivity

An 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard in the 1958, as is an eight-speaker audio system, while the two higher trims move to a 12.3-inch touchscreen system. The Land Cruiser trim is enhanced with a 10-speaker audio system, while the First Edition gets the luxury treatment with a 14-speaker JBL audio system (which is optional for the middle trim via the Premium Package). Every trim has wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, and a 30-day free trial to Wi-Fi Connect. Access to the subscription-based Drive Connect (Cloud Navigation, Intelligent Assistant, and Destination Assist) is open to all as well.
