2024 Toyota GR Supra

Overview

The Toyota GR Supra enjoys something of a cult following, with true devotees who have long appreciated its merits. The Supra’s story began in 1978, when it was introduced as a larger and higher-powered trim level of the Celica. Its popularity led Toyota to eventually make it a distinct nameplate: in 1985 the rear-wheel-drive Supra split off from the front-wheel-drive Celica within the brand’s sports-car lineup. After Toyota put the Supra to sleep in 2002, its fans were heartbroken, with most never losing hope that it would return one day. That happened in 2019 following a collaboration with BMW, which redesigned its Z4 coupe in unity with Toyota’s resurrection of its much-missed two-seater, which it rebranded as the GR Supra in honor of the manufacturer’s Gazoo Racing division. One difference between these two models developed in parallel is that the Z4 was available with a manual transmission from the outset, while the GR Supra was not. In response to consumers’ pleas for that sporty option, Toyota rectified the situation in the second half of model year 2023. That six-speed gearbox is offered again with this latest edition.

The 2024 GR Supra continues the model’s fifth generation with the same attributes that made it popular way back when. There’s even a celebratory 45th Anniversary Edition trim this model year: it’s offered in either nostalgic Mikan Blast orange or Absolute Zero white exterior paint with an adjustable rear spoiler, sleek "SUPRA" body graphics in black, and retro-style matte-black wheels. It’ll be a challenge to get ahold of one though, as Toyota is making just 900 units.

Trims and Mechanical Details

The rear-drive 2024 GR Supra comes in three trim choices – 2.0, 3.0, and 3.0 Premium – along with the limited-run 45th Anniversary Edition. The 2.0 gets the base engine, a turbocharged 2.0-liter twin-scroll four-cylinder (output: 255 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque). The 3.0, 3.0 Premium, and 45th Anniversary Edition move up to a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that makes 382 hp and 368 lb.-ft. of torque. Repeating the good news from the intro, a six-speed manual is offered on versions with the six-cylinder engine; an eight-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters is otherwise standard.

The EPA has estimated that fuel economy for the 2.0 is 25 mpg around town and 31 mpg on the highway. The three higher trims with the automatic transmission are rated for 23 mpg city/31 mpg highway; the six-speed stick changes that to 19 city/27 highway.

Standard Features

The base GR Supra, the 2.0, gets some great equipment, such as Smart Key proximity keyless entry, auto-leveling LED headlights, sport seats clad in Alcantara (simulated leather) upholstery, heated exterior mirrors with reverse gear tilt-down, push-button ignition, an 8.8-inch digital gauge cluster, carbon-fiber interior trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, and 18-inch two-tone cast-aluminum wheels. The interior rearview mirror and the driver’s-side exterior mirror are auto-dimming.

The 3.0 is the lowest trim eligible for the manual gearbox. As far as standard features, it gets heated seats (power-adjustable for both driver and passenger), auto-folding side mirrors, and a position memory system. Its wheels are 19 inches with forged aluminum wheels in gunmetal gray. The 3.0 Premium gets those same wheels but is upgraded with a Qi-compatible wireless phone charging tray, authentic leather upholstery, and sport pedals. With a run of just 900 units, the 45th Anniversary Edition has a distinct appearance with orange strut tower braces, wheels finished in matte-black, a manually adjustable rear spoiler, and black “SUPRA” side graphics.

Active Safety Equipment

Toyota supplies the 2024 GR Supra with front, side curtain, and knee airbags along with some advanced driver-assist technologies for increased safety. All trims get automatic high beams, hill start assist, brake assist, lane departure warning with steering assist, and a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The 2.0 and 3.0 get the base infotainment system, marked by an 8.8-inch display screen, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a sound system with four speakers. The 3.0 booms with 10 speakers, while the 3.0 Premium and 45th Anniversary Edition get a 12-speaker premium JBL HiFi unit with surround sound, plus an 8.8-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone connection (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), and Toyota Supra Connect.
